Reviving community buildings: energy efficiency strategies from an architect
October 19, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
‘Architecture Unknown’ specialises in reviving community buildings and will be sharing strategies to improve energy efficiency with community buildings .
About this session:
Volunteers and trustees who run community buildings are invited to an online webinar with architects from ‘Architecture Unknown’ to share information about what to consider in terms of energy efficiency when changing your community building including:
• Common myths and preconceptions
Debunking the idea that long-term energy efficiency (and saving money) is simply a matter of getting a new type of boiler, heat distribution system or adding PV panels. Highlighting that modern sustainable home heating systems require a high level of thermal efficiency.
• Routes to heat loss: Conduction, Convection and Radiation
How do buildings lose (and gain) heat? An overview of the building science.
• Introducing a Fabric First approach to energy conservation
Before introducing new systems, how can we prioritise reducing energy demand. The best energy efficiency measures target demand not supply.
• The rule of unintended consequences: What happens when you turn a high ventilation, high energy availability system into a low ventilation, low energy demand system?
How to avoid issues with moisture dispersal/mould when switching to a new energy model.
• Methods of moisture control and avoiding thermal bridging
Humidity-activated ventilation, heat recovery systems and hydroscopic internal finishes along with careful, robust detailing around key junctions.
• Conclusion: Should I get an Air Source Heat Pump?
